P&G'S MILITARY GIFT PACK

A Token of Appreciation for Our Servicemen at Christmas

For 25 years and during three major military conflicts, Procter & Gamble has made the Yuletide season a little happier for our people in uniform by sending them Christmas gift packs.

Early last month some 360 gift boxes containing the items shown in the photo above were mailed from our Advertising Department Service Building in Cincinnati to addresses all over the world where P & G men are serving their country.  The boxes were shipped early to make sure all of our people on military leave of absence would receive their gift packs before Christmas.

The custom of sending a special gift to men in service started during World War II, when more than 3,000 men and women in uniform were on the mailing list for the military gift pack.  At first, in 1942, the gift was only a carton of cigarettes, but in succeeding years it grew to include such items as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, razor and blades, chocolate bars, cheese, nuts, candy, lighters, stationery, playing cards, books, clocks, flashlights, games and manicure sets--all handl, useful gifts for the servicemen.

Preparations for the military gift packs each year are started as early as March.  Care is made to choose appropriate, high-quality items for the package, and the items are carefully assembled, packed and mailed from the Advertising Department Service Building.

Addresses of our men in the Armed Forces are supplied by each plant long before the gifts are mailed.

Naturally, as the times change, the items in the gift pack have changed.  During World War II it was customary for P & G to send two kinds of packs--one for servicemen and another for women who were also in the military.  Our men in service have always welcomed the selection of the Company products included in the gift pack.

However different its content over the last 25 years, the purpose of the military gift pack has remained the same:  to extend the Company's best wishes for a happy Christmas to its people who are serving their nation--frequently far from home and frequently under far from comfortable conditions.
